The Pelham YMCA was established in 1997 as a result of a joint venture between the Birmingham YMCA and Shelby Baptist Medical Center. The facility was designed with the entire family in mind. Architecture was very modern and boasted over 41,000 square feet of facilities including areas for health and wellness, childcare, basketball, volleyball, field sports and leadership programs for youth, teens, adults, and seniors. Still today, the hospital houses one of their outpatient physical therapy facilities inside our YMCA.
Volunteering is one of the essential ways the Y engages people and helps them to be healthy, confident, and connected to others. The role of volunteers distinguishes the Y as a place where everyone can take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change in the community. The Pelham YMCA is driven by an ongoing assessment of community needs and led by a board of community volunteers. Program volunteers assist with educational programs, mentorships, youth sports, and special projects, as well.
More than a place, the YMCA is a cause. With programs from A to Z – like athletics to advocacy, dance classes to disease prevention, volleyball to volunteerism – we don’t just strengthen individuals, we strengthen our community. Our organization impacts so many people in so many ways. Everyone has a role to play. Together, we can achieve so much more.
We are located near Pelham, Helena, Riverchase, and South Hoover.
