Roebuck Revitalization

ADDRESSING INEQUITIES

The Roebuck Community

The Northeast YMCA became part of the Roebuck community in 1965 when Roebuck was a thriving Birmingham suburb and a destination for shopping, dining, and other family-based activities. Today, Roebuck has fallen into a state of violent crime and economic depression, ranking near the bottom of Birmingham’s 99 recognized neighborhoods in several life-altering categories.

Roebuck residents, especially those with low to moderate incomes, need access to a variety of opportunities and services that many of us take for granted.  Among the most urgent needs:

    • Attainable housing in a safe neighborhood
    • Quality healthcare and preventative medicine
    • Access to early childhood education
    • Academic support for school-age children
    • Youth, teen and senior programs
    • Summer camp to support working parents

TRANSFORMATIONAL PROJECT

PARTNERING FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE

The YMCA of Greater Birmingham will lead a transformational effort to address these areas and bring a sense of rebirth and revitalization to Roebuck, thanks in large part to a collaboration with two well respected partners, Habitat for Humanity and Christ Health Center.

The Northeast YMCA will undergo a renovation that will transform the facility into a true community resource center with surrounding amenities that will offer the following:

  • Two additional early learning pre-K classrooms (Total of three serving up to 54 children)
  • Academic and development programming for youth and teens
  • Programming and activities for seniors
  • Two community gardens
  • Three age-specific playgrounds
  • Multi-purpose sports field and splash pad

A partnership with Habitat for Humanity will create a path to homeownership:

  • 23 single family homes will be built on the land surrounding the Northeast Y
  • Creates a purpose-built, walkable neighborhood
  • Offers affordable and quality workforce housing in a community in need

Christ Health Center will address health inequities in children:

  • World class pediatric care for children living in low-to-moderate households
  • Health and wellness education
  • Access to additional diagnostic equipment, dental care and pharmacy

In addition, Impact Family Counseling will provide onsite services to address the counseling and mental health needs of families in the Roebuck Community.
