Women Helping Women

Mujeres Ayudando a Mujeres (M@M) is a culturally inclusive initiative at the Hoover & Alabaster YMCA dedicated to supporting Latina women in Jefferson County. Designed as a compassionate, community-based program, M@M serves as an essential entry point to holistic resources and services for first-generation immigrants and Spanish speakers, most of whom come from low to moderate-income households. 

This program is especially vital for Latinas seeking to exit abusive relationships or begin a journey toward independence and stability. While not exclusive to survivors of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), M@M has become a first step toward self-help and healing for many.

Program includes:

-A safe, supportive space to build community
-Holistic, culturally relevant programming focused on independence and empowerment
-Resource navigation and referrals to local support services
-Financial assistance for YMCA family memberships and youth development programs
-Opportunities for connection, growth, and wellness

Who We Serve:
M@M currently supports approximately 80 Latina women, ages 18 to 67, along with their families. Program participants receive financial assistance to access the full range of YMCA of Greater Birmingham amenities, including youth development programs that directly benefit children between the ages of 3 and 17.  Our mission is to walk alongside women as they navigate new beginnings, build resilience, and thrive in their communities.
