Lifeguard - Mountain Brook YMCA

This position is responsible for supervising the aquatic facility and/or aquatic activities to secure and ensure the safety of all those involved. The lifeguard also maintains all areas in and around the aquatic facility. These duties will be performed while practicing the “Y” values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Current Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification (we are not offering certification currently, applicant must be previously certified)
  2. Some previous experience is desired.
  3. Must be mature and dependable
  4. Must be 15 years of age or older. 

GRADE QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Maintain a YMCA or Red Cross certification in the following: CPR for the Professional Rescuer/1st Aid, AED, Lifeguarding
  2. Reasoning ability, able to follow instructions
  3. Customer service skills
  4. Able to prioritize and multitask

  7. Ability to provide feedback

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Able to stand, bend, squat, push, pull and reach over head
  2. Lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds
  3. Able to work in/outdoors in different temperatures
  4. Must be able to swim 300 yards monthly

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

  1. Know and enforce aquatic rules, procedures, policies, and guidelines. 
  2. Wash the deck, maintain cleanliness and keep the deck free of obstructions. 
  3. Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas. 
  4. Take and record chemical readings.
  5. Dress appropriately for guarding duties – YMCA lifeguard shirt, swim suit (red, black or navy), name tag, whistle, fanny pack.
  6. Responsible for dealing with patrons’ concerns and needs in a professional manner. 
  7. Report problems and violations to supervisor. 
  8. Handle equipment as assigned. 
  9. Arrive on time to begin shift. 
  10. Take ownership of the pool and responsibilities. 
  11. In the event of an absence, find a substitute and inform the supervisor as soon as possible.
  12. Secure pool facility at the close of business and when the pool is not in use, inspect aquatic facility when opening the pool for any problem areas. 
  13. Maintain cleanliness of aquatics activity/area/facility. 
  14. Report injuries to the supervisor and fill out the required and appropriate forms. 
  15. Attend all scheduled staff meetings. 
  16. Take directions from Head Lifeguards and/or Aquatics Coordinator.
  17. Be knowledgeable of and promote branch programs and membership. 
  18. Perform check of all safety/emergency equipment at start of scheduled shift & alert management of any issues. 
  19. Perform other duties as assigned/required.

Under the direction of the Regional Childcare Director, the Afterschool Academy Site Coordinator is responsible for the overall program development and the supervision of all on site staff at assigned school location. These duties will be performed while practicing the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

This position will be assigned a school site within the Hoover City Schools.

Assist the Regional Childcare Director in planning, administering, and evaluating the entire afterschool program. Assist in staff training, lead monthly staff meetings, and complete staff evaluations. Support afterschool administration in the planning, supervision, and implementation of curriculum requirements. Maintain positive relationships and communication with students, parents, and other staff members by participating and leading programs and responding to parent concerns. Generally, be on site all day each day of the program. May be in charge of a group of students when the need arises.Responsible for the daily supervision of all counselors and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Bachelor's degree in education or other relevant field preferred.  High School diploma required.
  2. 1-3 Prior experience in education, recreation, physical education, teaching or childcare preferred.
  3. Minimum age of 21 years old.
  4. Prior experience in staff supervision, program and fiscal management
  5. Successful completion of background and Child Abuse and Neglect screening.
  6. Must be customer service focused with strong communication skills both orally and written with solid computer skills.
  7. Acquire and maintain the following certifications prior to start date via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):
    • - 1st Aid/ CPR /AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)
  8. Requisite Risk Management/Safety Online Training Modules (completed prior to starting date and repeated annually).
