The YMCA of Greater Birmingham is a charitable organization dedicated to making our community a healthier place to live. At the Y, everyone gets stronger. The Y’s cause-driven focus on health and well-being helps people throughout Birmingham find balance in life. The Y gives children, adults and families the opportunity to become part of a cause that gives them the opportunity to learn and grow while also making their community healthier and stronger, regardless of their race, age or financial situation. In order to address the growing health and wellness of our community, the Birmingham Y has several programs designed to help people facing such chronic conditions as type 2 diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure regain their health and quality of life.
Lifestyle changes such as eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight can prevent or delay development of type 2 diabetes. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain these healthy habits to reduce your risk and help you take control of your health.Participants work together in a supportive, small group to learn about healthier eating and increasing physical activity in order to reduce their risk for developing diabetes. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, Cancer Survivorship at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body. The Birmingham YMCA’s Cancer Survivorship Program is a 12-week program that empowers cancer survivors to take an active role in their health. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance and improving confidence and self-esteem. In 2015, the Birmingham YMCA became one of seven sites invited to participate in a blood pressure management program. Participants meet with a “healthy heart ambassador” at the Y who regularly check blood pressure levels, answer questions, and make a wellness plan. Participants also have access to nutrition seminars with advice on lowering sodium intake, and how to shop, cook and prepare healthy meals. Find more information here.
