Our program is open to swimmers ages 5 years to 18 years of age. The only requirement to be on our team is the swimmer must be able to swim one full length of the pool unassisted. An evaluation is not necessary.
Practice is offered Monday thru Friday from 7:30-8:30 AM for all ages. However, participants are not required to attend all five days if scheduling does not permit. Youth Development is the social-emotional, cognitive, and physical processes that all youth uniquely experience from birth to career. A successful development process fulfills children and teens’ innate need to be loved, spiritually grounded, educated, competent, and healthy. Trading stories and sharing a favorite book or song with a new friend. Being greeted with smiles and high-fives from staff and team-mates after scoring the winning point. Always fitting in, just for being you. This is what the Y's summer camp is all about—ensuring kids get more out of their summer break: more friendships, more accomplishments and more belonging.
We demonstrate the role positive relationships play in the well-being of a child through:
Staff-Camper Relationships, Camper Peer Friend-Making & Parent Engagement
We help children realize their passions, talents and potential through:
Achievement Passport, Skill Variety & Mastery Charts & Disguised Learning Activities Through STEM, Reading and Writing.
We are a place where kids feel safe, welcomed and can express their individuality through:
Autonomous Choices, Rituals and Traditions, Daily Activity Framework & Inclusion.
Our core values: We make our core values—caring, honesty, respect and responsibility—part of everything we do.
Our commitment: We plan our programs around with developing the whole child. We will create a fun and engaging environment that is focuses on friendship, accomplishment and belonging.
Our staff: We are caring, competent and experienced. Our training includes camp safety, activity planning, CPR, First Aid, and more, making your child’s experience both safe and fun.
Low camp staff/child ratios: 1:10 entering grades K-3 | 1:12 entering grades 4-8
Our promise: No child is denied access due to inability to pay.
Our pledge: We are dedicated to making you and your child’s experiences at the Y extraordinary. At the end of the day, your child will come home with stories of a fun-filled and fabulous day.
Campers will experience the adventure and excitement of the outdoors daily, meet new friends, and express their growing independence under the supervision of qualified and caring YMCA camp staff. Camp activities include games, sports, field trips, crafts, songs, skits, swimming and water activities. All campers will go on two scheduled outings per week.
Our 6th - 8th grade program is developed especially for those adolescents who need something fun, meaningful and active to do over the summer! Campers will spend time playing games outdoors, meeting new friends, going on multiple weekly field trips, swimming and sports. They’ll also get to experience volunteer opportunities and will spend one afternoon per week reading to younger groups.

It is the goal of the Birmingham YMCA to make sure that everyone who participates in our aquatics programing is safe. These Swim test guidelines are one way to help ensure our goal is met. All swim tests are conducted by the certified lifeguard on duty.
The participant must jump into the deep end of the pool, tread water for 30 seconds and swim on top of the water approximately 25 yards without stopping or touching bottom/sides of pool.
If the participant passes the test, he or she will receive a green wristband and may swim free in the pool.
If the participant does not pass the test or does not want to take the test, he or she will receive a red wristband and will need to do one of the following: the participant must wear a life jacket; or if no life jacket is worn, an adult 18 or older must be in the pool with the participant no more than an arm's length away.
All participants under 14 must follow these guidelines.
All parties must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. All parties are scheduled for a two hour time slot. Parties are welcome to bring their own food, paper goods, and decorations. No glass is permitted due to Health Department regulations. Parties will have access to an ice machine; no need for you to buy bags of ice!
A lifeguard will be assigned to each party and can help with setup & cleanup while guests are not in the pool. The assigned guard will administer a swim test to all youth under the age of fourteen, no exceptions. All youth under the age of fourteen will not be permitted to enter the pool prior to completing the swim test. A copy of the YMCA Swim Test Policy can be found here. The guard will then assist the other guards on duty with monitoring the pool.
All parties are expected to comply with all YMCA rules & policies during the use of our facility. Please ensure you and your guests have reviewed our Pool Rules and Whirlpool Rules prior to arrival.
