YOUTH STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Our Youth Strength and Conditioning class is designed to teach children ages 10-14 the benefits of strength/cardio training and how to use the equipment saftely and properly. Children will be coached by a certified personal trainer for 3 one-hour sessions that are scheduled at your convenience. 

Upon successful completion of the program, he/she will receive a yellow wristband signifying this acheivement. For the safety of all of our members, children under the age of 14 will be asked to leave the cardio/weight area if they are not wearing this band.

PROGRAM DETAILS:

When: Days and times that are convenient with your schedules

Where: The personal trainer will meet you and your child at the front desk. 

Cost: $50 for 3 one-hour sessions

american Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Classes

Being a lifeguard can be a very challenging and rewarding job. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross Universal Certification indicating Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. This certification will be valid for 2 years, assuming the participant stays in good standing with the American Red Cross. Participants must attend all classes, as well as pass two final written exams and three water scenario tests. Unsuccessful completion of any of these components will result in failure of the class. No refunds will be issued if a participant fails the class. No exceptions.

CLASS PREREQUISITES

15 years of age or older by the last day of class
Successful Completion of the Following Skills:
Swim 300 yards continuously (face in the water, demonstrating rhythmic breathing) 
Tread water for two minutes using only the legs
A timed event that consists of swimming 20 yds, recovering a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool and swimming it back to the starting point (with both hands holding the brick) in under 1 minute and 40 seconds

We will introduce basic water safety to parents and provide a positive family aquatic experience

WATER ACCLIMATION
No Skills Required. This class increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.  
In class: Will learn to blow bubbles, put face in water, proper kicking, paddling, front and back floats with use of flotation devices.
 
Level 2 - Beginner/Intermediate
WATER MOVEMENT
Skills required: This class is for swimmers who can jump in on their own and swim 10 feet assisted.
In class: Encourages forward movement in the water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.  During class will work on unassisted front and back glides and floats, treading water, rolling from front to back and back to front in the water.
Level 3 - Intermediate
WATER STAMINA
Skills required: This is for swimmers who can jump in on their own and swim 5-10 yards unassisted.
In class: Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in  previous levels. During class will work on swimming on front and back, and treading water.
Level 4 - Advanced
STROKE INTRODUCTION
Skills required: For swimmers who can already swim on front and back for 15-25 yards unassisted.  
In class: Introduces basic stroke technique in freestyle and backstroke and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.  Will work on all competitive strokes and rescue strokes.

2018-2019 year-round Practice Levels:

Level I (our old SuperSquad/Copper): In this level, we focus on proper stroke techniques and developing stamina.  We introduce small amounts of competition. 
Practice Days & Times: Tuesday's and Thursday's 5:30-6:30pm.
 
Level II (our old Bronze): In this level, swimmers are ready for small amounts of competition. Bronze swimmers are still working on the four competitive strokes. Competition is encouraged along with good sportsmanship and teamwork, self-esteem and respect.
Practice Days & Times: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5:30-6:30
 
Level III (our old Silver): This is a more advanced level, with emphasis on training principles. This group will enable the swimmers to meet new challenges and set new goals.  They will incorporate limited dryland exercises.

Junior I (our old Gold): This level is an environment for commited and motived young swimmers who desire to set goals and work towards the highest high school state level, southeastern level and national age group level standards. The training in this level is advanced.

2019 Trussville ymca summer swim team

Our summer swim team is a fun competitive summer league swim team for ages 5-18.  Participation on the team is based on basic swimming abilities:

*  8 & under: swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards without assistance
*  9 & older: swimmers must be able to swim 50 yards (two lengths of the pool) without assistance.

Our summer league dual meets are held on Tuesday's - usually starting around 4:30/5pm. We usually have 4-5 dual meets, which are included in the summer fee.  We will also have several optional Invitational meets that will be offered for a small fee.

Pickleball

Pickleball is now at the Y!

Join the fastest growing new sport in America!  This low-impact game combines elements of tennis, table tennis, and badminton.  Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a whiffle ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis (with a few modifications).

Come join us on Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The best way to get involved playing pickleball at Trussville Y is to contact Jarvis. Jarvis will give you detailed program info and set up a personal “Pickleball Orientation” to determine your playing level and help you find the program or activity that is best for you.  Please contact Jarvis at 205-655-2224 

 

A pickleball court is the same size as a doubles badminton court and measures 20×44 feet. In pickleball, the same court is used for both singles and doubles play. The net height is 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches in the middle. The court is striped similar to a tennis court with right and left service courts and a 7-foot non-volley zone in front of the net (referred to as the “kitchen”). Tennis

Shelley Wirt, TENNIS DIRECTOR

Shelley Wirt began her employment in December 2016 at the YMCA of Greater Birmingham Trussville as the Director of Tennis. She will be responsible for developing, maintaining and promoting all tennis programs to include leagues, round robins, clinics, mixers, camps for adults and youth and overall junior development. 

Shelley received an academic/tennis scholarship to Birmingham-Southern College and went on to finish her BS at The University of Alabama with a degree in Human Environmental Sciences.    

Shelley began her professional career at Pine Tree Country Club where she honed her skills as a teaching professional under the tutelage of Jimmy Weinacker through 2010. She was then on to the Trussville Racquet Club where she resided as Head Tennis Professional until her tenure began at the Y.

Shelley brings experience, professionalism, and excitement to our tennis program and looks forward to serving, and growing, the program and meeting the needs of all individuals. 

 

 

Nate Pagel- Tennis Professional

My name is Nate Pagel. I grew up in a small town in southwest Michigan on an apple farm. I graduated from Ferris State University with a degree in Professional Tennis Management in December of 2017. During my college career, I taught tennis on internships in Chicago, New York City, and Hilton Head Island. I am both USPTA and PTR certified, and I am also a certified Master Racquet Technician. I have had the privileged to string for a tournament featuring the top 16 ranked men's collegiate teams in the country and have even strung racquets for a former Wimbledon semifinalist. Currently I also work as the Associate Director of the United States Racquet Stringer's Association and a Contributing Editor to Tennis Industry Magazine. At my high school I hold records for most 6-0 sets won, most 6-0, 6-0 matches won, and most doubles wins in a season, and am a member of the 100 mph club. In fact, I have been known to serve upwards of 120 mph on occasion. On my club tennis team in college, I have recorded wins over schools such as the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, and the University of Georgia. Outside of tennis, I have competed on my college’s club volleyball team, I won the only waterski tournament I have ever entered, and I am an avid pickleball and spikeball player.

 

Danielle Boggis- Tennis Professional

     My name is Danielle Boggis.  I was born in Wyoming but grew up in Nevada.   My first love growing up was golf.  After college I worked in the golf business as a club professional and instructor at a public course in Nevada where I became a member of the PGA of America in 1997 until I resigned in 2005.     

      I moved to Trussville, Al. in 2002, and I decided to sign up for beginning adult tennis lessons,  mostly for the exercise and to meet people.  After the first lesson I was hooked!!!  I signed up for woman’s leagues and started playing all around Birmingham.  I joined the YMCA and after a few years was asked if I would like to help with the kids tennis program.  I accepted and was hired on part time in 2010.   During that time I have become a certified USTPA instructor and teach kids and beginning adult lessons. 

     I still enjoy golf, but I love the game of tennis and the fact that a person can be competitive or just have fun and get some great exercise.  The best part of my tennis experience has been meeting wonderful people and making some fantastic friends.

Come drop in to our clinics! Each week we work on a new fundamental in a 5 week progression of forehand, backhand, serve, volley and specialty shots. We drill for 45 mins and then play round robin style for the last 45mins. Co -ed and All levels welcome!!

Come learn the sport of a lifetime! You are never to old to begin playing tennis! This clinic is for those who have never touched a racquet up to those who are dusting off the rust of their middle school racquet and ready to give it another shot! Starting 6/14/18 we will begin evening clinics geared towards the art of doubles! This will include drills on the fundamentals of poaching, drills on touch shots such as lobbing, and drop shots; We will volley until the cows come home, we will teach you to strategize with your partners and educate you on how to work together to win those pesky tie breaks! Co -ed, Drop - ins and All levels welcome!

COURT RULES

• To reserve a court, you MUST have the Tennis Membership Add on in ADDITION to your regularly monthly Birmingham Y membership. These two memberships are different. 

Tennis add on fee is... $11 for individual membership, $16 for two people membership, and $19 for family membership. 

If you are interested in adding a Tennis Membership to your account please obtain a Membership Change Form from either the welcome center or contact the Business Office at businessoffice@ymcabham.org

If you would NOT like to add the tennis add on to your membership, you can NOT reserve a court, but may use our courts, if available. You will have to pay $7 guest fee, each time you come to play.

• All courts may be reserved for a maximum of 1.5 hours under one name. Any additional 30 minutes must be booked in another tennis membership's name.

A court reservation may be made up to one week in advance. 

When booking a court, please have ready: You last name, first initial, and member number (the barcode located on the back of your scan card). 


GUEST FEES 

• If a Tennis Member decides to bring a guest, a tennis guest fee MUST be paid. The fee is $7 for the first 3 visits, then for the 4th-6th visit, they will have to pay additional Y day fee of $15 PLUS $7 for tennis guest fee...which is a TOTAL of $22. 

A program-Y member is only allowed to come 6 times through out the year, unless get approval by the Tennis Director, Shelley Wirt. 

Y members but WITHOUT the tennis add on will only have to pay $7 each time they decide to come and play. We highly encourage them to add tennis to membership if they come to play at least twice a month. 

Tennis guests must be playing with a Y Tennis member, can't have 2 guest or 4 guests by themselves on the court without a tennis member.
