Youth Fitness Safety Training

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Who: Boys and Girls Ages 9-13

When: Mondays at 6:00 pm or Thursdays at 9:00 am

Cost: Free! Please register at the Member Service Desk

A certified Personal Trainer will teach the basics of safety in cardio and full body strength.  Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a wristband that allows them to exercise on the cardiovascular equipment, as well as select machine weights.

 

TRX Small Group Training

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Tuesday mornings at 8:15 am

Thursday mornings at 5:15 am, 8:15 am & 9:00 am (this class is more advanced than the earlier offerings)

Cost: $5/person/class

TRX exercise develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously.

TRX leverages gravity and the user’s body weight, so you're in control of how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise - because you can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance!

american Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Classes

Being a lifeguard can be a very challenging and rewarding job. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross Universal Certification indicating Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. This certification will be valid for 2 years, assuming the participant stays in good standing with the American Red Cross. Participants must attend all classes, as well as pass two final written exams and three water scenario tests. Unsuccessful completion of any of these components will result in failure of the class. No refunds will be issued if a participant fails the class. No exceptions.

CLASS PREREQUISITES

15 years of age or older by the last day of class
Successful Completion of the Following Skills:
Swim 300 yards continuously (face in the water, demonstrating rhythmic breathing) 
Tread water for two minutes using only the legs
A timed event that consists of swimming 20 yds, recovering a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool and swimming it back to the starting point (with both hands holding the brick) in under 1 minute and 40 seconds

Participants seeking recertification must hold current, unexpired American Red Cross Lifeguard Certifications. Certificate must be presented to instructor on the first day of class.

WATER SAFETY AND HOME POOL SAFETY

This class covers information you need to know if you own a home pool or have access to a pool, such as in an apartment complex or condominium complex.  There will also be demonstration and practice of some basic lifesaving techniques that can be used to help someone in trouble in the water.

These classes are taught by apointment only.  Please call 205-580-1345.  Class time is approximately 30 minutes.

Pickleball

YMCA PIckleball

Join the fastest growing new sport in America!  This low-impact game combines elements of tennis, table tennis, and badminton.

Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a whiffle ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis (with a few modifications).

COURT RULES & Reservations

To reserve a court, your "Membership Type" MUST include the Tennis Membership Add-On.  The YMCA of Greater Birmingham does not have a "Tennis Only" Membership.  Fee structure listed below is in addition to your current YMCA membership type.

Individual Membership: $11/month
2 Individuals: $16/month
Family Membership: $19/month

Reserving Courts
  • - Courts may be reserved for a maximum of 1.5 hours under one name.
  •  
  • - For additional 30 minute increments, another tennis member must be present & have the court booked in their name.
  •  
  • - Courts may be reserved up to 7 days in advance
  •  
  • - When booking a court, please provide: Your Last Name, First Initial, Member Number (barcode you use to scan into the facility), Phone Number

If you do not have the Tennis Member Add-On listed on your Membership Type, you can NOT reserve a court.  If a court is available & not already reserved, you may pay $7 guest fee during your visit to use a court (visits 1-3). 

Tennis Guests & Fees
Tennis Members may bring a guest.  The following rules will be enforced:
 
  • - The Guest may only visit 6 times in a calendar year
  • - The Guest Fee is $7 for each visit (up to 3 total visits)
  • - The Guest Fee increases to $10 for visits 4, 5 & 6
  • - Guests MUST be hosted by a YMCA Member with the Tennis Add-On

Anything outside of these parameters MUST be approved in advance by the Tennis Director.
