THE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

YMCA Camp Cosby offers a unique environmental education experience for students during the school year. Our programs allow students to explore relationships in nature and learn about the world around them, while developing problem-solving, critical thinking and leadership skills.

Mission and Goals

YMCA Camp Cosby, a branch of the Birmingham YMCA, is committed to the mission to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body.  All YMCA Camp Cosby programs have traditionally been founded on this mission of serving people.  This program planning guide is intended to assist teachers who are either considering or planning an Outdoor Education experience at YMCA Camp Cosby.  Outdoor Education is not just “camp” but an educational experience with important implications for the student both in the outdoors and back in the classroom.  Our program is designed to be an extension of the YMCA mission.  The OE mission strives to encourage students to learn more about themselves while living and working cooperatively in a community environment.  Full participation in the planning process and in the program itself will ensure the students a rewarding educational experience.  The directors and staff are trained and experienced in every aspect of the program, and are very willing to help make your school’s stay at YMCA Camp Cosby a rewarding one.

The goals of YMCA Camp Cosby Outdoor Education Program are:

  • To enable students to understand and experience the relationship between themselves and the natural environment, and their roles as stewards
  • To strengthen social relationships between:
    1. Teachers, adults and students
    2. Students and their peers
  • To give the student a sense of independence and self-identity
  • To give all students a chance to succeed in a non-graded environment
  • To encourage active participation in outdoor activities
  • To promote the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility

The teaching staff at YMCA Camp Cosby believes that Outdoor Education involves more than just understanding environmental sciences and issues.  We must also provide opportunities for students to learn effective communication skills, and build the foundations of real cooperation.

OUR SPECIALTY - LIVING HISTORY

Join the Cosby staff on a journey though history with our signature program.

WAYS OF THE OLD DAYS

Students will travel back in time and experience what life was like for settlers and pioneers. Not only will they learn history of that time period, but they will also get to try some “old days” activities such as candle making and cast iron cooking. Student will even get to view old tools and learn how they were used. Students will leave this program appreciating modern conveniences and having a greater appreciation for the way life use to be.

COSBY GOLD RUSH

Cosby Gold Rush is a hands on living history program in which students will be able to experience what life was like for people during the California Gold Rush of the late 1840's and early 1850's. Students will learn the time and tribulations it took to travel to California, famous people involved, panning techniques, era ways and customs, and be able to live the life of a 49er. All of the activities presented in the Cosby Gold Rush are designed and implemented to allow students to emphasize and experience an interactive introduction into the California Gold Rush Era.

Archaeological Dig

Students get to put on their metaphorical surveyor caps as they dig for artifacts at our archaeological dig site. Students learn and discuss the methods of surveying a dig site, tools that archaeologists use, as well as the differences and similarities between archaeology and its close relative paleontology. Naturalists discuss significant archaeological discoveries as well as dig methods before letting the students find the artifacts buried in our dig site. Once an item is found, students use clues to determine which era in history the artifact appears to belong to.
