  • 1. How long is Phase 1?  Phases do not have specific timelines attached.  We will consider government and health guidance and Y services will be increased based on a combination of demand, utilization patterns, and our ability to deliver safe programs and services under limitations and requirements around social distancing, capacity, allowable services, and cleaning protocols - so stay tuned, we have already made several adjustments since opening on June 1!

  • 2. What are your hours:  Hours are listed here (hours may be adjusted in response to utilization patterns and other circumstantial situations- announcements will be posted on our APP and Website Home pages if changes are made to posted hours)

  • 3. How do I reserve a tennis court - Our courts are ready for Single or Doubles play and Lessons (for adults and juniors).  Contact the following for court and lesson reservations:

  • 4. Can I find out how busy the branch is before coming?  Yes, log in to your YMCA account ymcabham.org/update-your-account and you may check branch capacity for any YMCA of Greater Birmingham membership branch.  You may also click HERE to see all branches in one view

  • 5. How do I make a reservation for a Group X Class? Reservations may be made on our website and through our mobile APP (preferred). See https://www.ymcabham.org/reopen for instructions and links to download the latest version of the APP or click HERE on your mobile device

  • 6. How do I make a reservation for a Lap Lane or Open Swim? See the above instructions for Group X classes. Reservations for lanes are handled on the same platform. Lap Swim may be made 36 hours in advance of the session and are currently for 45-minute blocks. Open Swim may be made 3 days in advance and are currently in 1 hour 45-minute reservation blocks.

  • 7. Will my family and I be able to Free Swim or lounge on the pool deck?  YES! Effective 6/29/20 we will reopen our Pools for Open Swim and Pool Deck lounging.  Please see our reservation details to reserve for yourself and/or your family and information in #6

  • 8. Will deck space be available for lounging at the pool?  # 7
  • 9. How can I request adjustments to my membership?  You may contact businessoffice@ymcabham.org or ymcabham.org/update-your-account.  Click HERE for more information on membership options.

  • 10. Will you have Summer Day Camp?  Our Summer Fun Club programming starts 6/15/20. Contact childcare@ymcabham.org with inquiries and more information - space is limited but available.

  • 11. How do I download the APP? Click HERE on your Mobile Device or Search your APP store for Daxko , Get, Install, Open, Search for Birmingham, Select YMCA of Greater Birmingham . The APP will include our Group X, Lap Swim and other schedules, store your barcode for facility Check-In, and provide other communication and useful information including facility hours and contact information.

  • 12. How long are Group X classes  - Currently Group X Class instruction time will be 45 - 60 minutes of instruction/workout time.  Allow 5 minutes before and after class to clean personal equipment.  Late arrivals will not be admitted. Waitlists and waiting members will be given spots if reserved members have not arrived right before class start time.   • 13. How long can I lap swim? Lane reservations are currently for 45 minutes to allow for cleaning time of chairs and deck in btw sessions.

  • 14. Can I reserve back to back times for a lane?  We ask members to limit time to one Lane reservation per day per branch to allow maximum availability to all members

  • 15. Can I bring a guest, attend as a guest or use the facility under Y Nationwide?  Out of town members visiting from participating YMCA Associations under Y Nationwide are welcome.  We are currently not open for guests and are limiting our member services and facilities to active Y members.   • 16. Can I bring my children?  Most of our available services accommodate members 14 and up. We have phased in additional services since opening: Youth are allowed to reserve Lap Swim lanes with certain conditions; Youth ages 9-13 who have completed the Youth Fitness Orientation may resume use of fitness equipment (allowable under that program).  Children accompanied by an adult are welcome during our Open Swim hours. Learn and Play is currently suspended.

  • 17. Why are showers not available?  Shower access will return Thursday, August 6th!

  • 18. How will I rinse off before/after entering the pool?  See #17

  • 19.  Is Water Aerobics available? Yes - Check the APP or visit https://www.ymcabham.org/class-finder to view current schedules and register for your class.

  • 20.  Why are steam/sauna/whirlpools not available? Per current orders "b. Limits on facility access. An athletic facility shall limit facility occupancy to 50 percent of the normal occupancy load as determined by the fire marshal. Athletic facilities shall also prohibit patrons and guests from accessing, hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, and other recreational water or spa facilities. Pools may be open subject to the social-distancing rules of this paragraph. "  We will evaluate the operations of these spaces in future phases.

  • 21.  Will Racquetball Courts be available?  Racquetball play reopens 6/29/20 and courts are available at our Downtown, Greystone, and Trussville branches.  Contact the branch to reserve your court or walk on as available.

  • 22.  Do I need to make a reservation to use Cardio and Weight equipment if I am not swimming or doing classes?  No, reservations are not required for general use of fitness spaces, the track or open general use areas.  As long as we stay within 50% capacity limits and can maintain social distancing, these spaces are open first come first serve, no reservation required.

  • 23.  What will be different in my Group X class?  Make sure and arrive at the branch a few minutes early for our easy and quick check-in procedures. Late arrivals to class will not be admitted, even if the class spot is reserved. Class instruction/workout time will be 45 minutes. All classes will begin and end with a quick cleaning of equipment used.  Doors will be propped open, floors will be marked for spacing, no sharing of equipment during class (no moving stations).  You will still experience the awesome workout and instructors you expect.

  • 24.  Can I use the facility under my Silver Sneaker participation?  Yes, Active Y members and Silver Sneaker program participants have facility access on June 1.  We will not be offering Silver Sneaker CLASSES or others designed especially for the active older adult, but participants are welcome to check-in for general facility use or participation in other Group X classes.   • 25.  When will Learn and Play reopen?  We currently do not have a definite timeframe to provide around Learn and Play services.  As social distancing and other requirements are adjusted, we will be able to reconsider additional services. Once we are able to open, we will be certain to communicate it as we are eager for your little ones (and their parents) to be able to return safely to the Y!

  • 26.  Are the Group Exercise rooms available to members when they are not being used for classes? During this time of Phase 1 operations, due to necessary cleaning protocols, Group X rooms will be limited to scheduled classes only and will not be available for general member use or rental outside of scheduled classes.  All other fitness spaces will be open for general member use.

  • 27.  When will basketball pick up games or open gym resume?  Most of our gym spaces are currently staged to service socially distanced Group X classes and/or school-age child care programs.  Basketball court usage for other purposes is currently not in place in response to social distancing orders.  Consideration will be made as we continue to evaluate the ability to control distancing and provide a safe space for play once our spaces become more available for general member use.

  • 28.  Can I rent the facility or pool for birthday parties or other events?  Our facilities will not be available for rent for the foreseeable future

  • 29.  When will additional Group X classes be offered?  Current schedules were developed considering formats and timeslots that experienced the highest utilization pre-COVID. Our current schedule at most branches is running around 50% class load of a "normal" schedule. Services will be expanded based on several considerations, among them, member demand, utilization, and spatial allowances. Current capacity is exceeding demand/participation in most classes.  We will add and adjust our schedules in response to member demand and capacity and we look forward to a more full schedule as members return to the Y.

  • 30. Will the Y resume Youth Sports programming (i.e Soccer, Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball)? Due to several considerations and limits placed on our facilities, staff, and programming, we will not be able to provide a sustainable Youth Sports program in the foreseeable future.  We will continue to consider options as we move through the year and can further evaluate conditions and the environment we are operating.

  • 31.  Are Face Coverings required to visit the Y?  In compliance with the Alabama State Order, Face Coverings are required when entering/exiting the facility and while in general member spaces. Face Coverings are NOT required while working out.
  • "Effective July 16, 2020 at 5:00 P.M., each person shall wear a mask or other facial covering that covers his or her nostrils and mouth at all times when within six feet of a person from another household in any of the following places: an indoor space open to the general public....b. Exceptions for exercise. The facial-covering requirement does not apply to: (i) Any person who is actively engaged in exercise in a gym or other athletic facility if he or she maintains six feet of separation from persons of another household;
