In 1986 I started my career in the fitness field by working the weight room at Sportslife (this very building). In the late ‘80’s, I was a lifeguard at the Downtown YMCA when my boss asked me if I had ever heard of something coming out of California called Personal Training. So, she and I built the foundation that started the Personal Training program for the Metro Y’s and is still in use today.
Needless to say, Personal Training is my life, so much so, that I have obtained a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and an Undergraduate Degree in Exercise Science. Certifications include: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Certified Master Trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Also from NASM: Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist, Behavior Change Specialist, Fitness Nutrition Specialist and last but not least, Golf Fitness Specialist. I have been the race director for numerous running and bicycling events, built a fitness trail around Mt Laurel’s Spoonwood Lake and owned and operated a Personal Training Studio in the Mountain Brook area for 22 years.
I can honestly tell you, we have some of the best Personal Trainers, Corrective Exercise Specialists and Health Coaches that Birmingham has to offer. My name is Amy Masingill and I am a Personal Trainer and Health Coach at the Mountain Brook YMCA. I graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in Fitness, Conditioning and Performance and I am certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. My passion for health and fitness began at a young age as I grew up doing competitive gymnastics and running track. I strive to guide and motivate each client to leave their exercise comfort zone in order to achieve optimal results. I love working with different types of people and helping them become the healthiest and strongest version of themselves.
My name is Brandon Willis, a certified personal trainer at the Mountain Brook YMCA. I attained my personal trainer certification from the National Federation of Professional Trainers (NFPT). My areas of concentration include: sports conditioning, injury management, and general fitness. Motivating clients to achieve their fitness target, and assisting them in reaching their potential is my passion. My goal for each client is to provide functional training that will improve overall health and quality of life. Fitness is not just a job for me, but a lifestyle.
My name is Haley Lisenba and I am a certified Personal Trainer and Health Coach at the Mountain Brook YMCA. I am a student at UAB pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Exercise Science. Following graduation, I plan to expand my education by pursuing a Master's degree in Sports Psychology. My experience begins with 15+ years in cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics, in addition to the 8+ years as a cheerleading and tumbling coach. I've coached all levels of cheerleading, including competitive, middle school, and high school. I have choreographed and coached many AHSAA state champion and UCA national champion cheerleading routines. Furthermore, I also have experience in instructing strength, conditioning, and flexibility classes. With my background in Psychology, I am trained to understand how the brain and body work together, making it my primary goal to teach my clients how to live happy, healthy lifestyles.
My name is Heather Roberson and I hold a Bachelors degree from Belmont University and attended UAB for a Master’s degree with education in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, wellness and nutrition. I am a Master Certified Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine specializing in corrective exercise science, women's fitness, and weight loss. I am also a Certified Sugar Detox Coach under Diane Sanfilippo’s, 21-Day Sugar Detox Program specializing in Paleo/Primal nutrition, blood sugar regulation, and digestive health. I have trained for over 4 years in Nashville, TN and now in Birmingham, AL. My hope is to share my knowledge, resources, and years of experience to inspire others to be their own advocate and take captive their health and preventative care. My passions for health, wellness, and nutrition have placed me in a position to help others find balance in their busy lives.
My name is Johnny Gregg, Personal Trainer at the Mountain Brook YMCA. I have had the privilege of being employed by the YMCA for over a decade and have been personal training for over fifteen years. I hold a bachelor’s degree from UAB as a Fitness Specialist, and I am currently certified with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. My passion includes promoting a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle. Building and maintaining a strong body you will reduce aches and pains and decrease chance of injury, all to increase quality and enjoyment of life.
My name is Kerry Foster. I am an AFAA certified Personal Trainer at the Mountain Brook YMCA. I’m a former collegiate athlete who has worked in the fitness industry for over 20 years. I have been a personal trainer for almost 12 years. I have experience working with all age groups. My goal as a fitness trainer is to help each of my clients attain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I take all aspects of fitness training and mix into one workout, tailored to each individual client’s needs and wants. My motto is “Be a good listener, and find out what the client wants to achieve. Never too late to get in shape”.
My name is Kevin White and I am a lifelong athlete and exercise enthusiast. I attended UAB’s School of Electrical Engineering graduating with a BSEE. I am an ACE (American Council on Exercise) certified personal trainer since 2004, and have an extensive background in endurance athletics. I competed in high school & collegiate cross country, earning the Most Valuable Runner Award during my last year at UAB and have assisted the Vestavia & Altamont high school cross country coaches. I have competed at the age group national level in Triathlons, Duathlons and Masters Bicycling; finishing 9th at the USA Cycling Masters National Time Trial Championships in Salt Lake City Utah in 2005. Additionally, I have won age group time trial championships in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee & Florida, taking 3rd in the 2012 Southeastern Time Trial Championships Cat 3 division. I was president of GC Cycling from 2004 to 2006, a member of Tria Cycling Team from 2006 to 2008 and am currently a member of SmithLock Cycling Team since 2009. My approach to training to is to provide a safe & balanced program that helps my clients achieve their fitness goals in a progressive & linear manner.
My name is Lauren Marsh. I graduated from Samford University with a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics. I am working on my Masters in Human Nutrition and will become a Registered Dietitian by the end of 2015. I ran track and cross country all through my college career, so fitness has always been a love of mine. I am a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine. I believe that proper nutrition and fitness are a dynamic duo that should be paired together.
My name is LeeAnna McFarlin. I am an AFAA certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor at the Mountain Brook YMCA. I have been in the fitness industry for 16 years. I also hold certifications in Pilates, Barre, and Step. Additionally, I'm a Level 1 and 2 YogaFit teacher and have instructed NFL players pre and post-operative in yoga. I believe that DNA doesn't necessarily mean destiny. Our activity levels, food choices, thoughts and beliefs can have positive affects on our health. Physical activity plays a key roll in disease prevention and mood elevation. Being physically fit helps to achieve optimum health. Seeing the positive changes fitness can make in a person's life and being a part of that process has inspired me to continue my work as a Y fitness professional.
My name is Micki Haralson, Personal Trainer at the Mountain Brook YMCA. I hold the following health and fitness certifications: AFAA- Personal Trainer, RRCA certified Running Coach, H.P.I. (Human Performance Institute) certified trainer, and C.P.S.I. (Creative Problem Solving Institute) certified facilitator. I have been a certified personal trainer for over five years, and I have always been very passionate about health and fitness. Additionally, I have participated in hundreds of races (69 marathons, 4 ultra marathons), completed twenty-five triathlons, a half Ironman, and attended thousands of fitness classes. I became a personal trainer because I love to help people change behaviors that will enrich, change and even save their lives. I have worked with many people and can attest to how fitness can reverse poor health conditions. I have long been a goal-setter and helping others achieve their goals in life is a passion of mine. Your goal may be to tone up, lose weight, eat better, complete a distance race, or set a PR (personal record). My name is Nivada Spurlock I am a lifelong physical educator with 26 years of experience in teaching fitness and wellness. For the past 7 years, I have worked specifically with the adult population in creating and directing the employee wellness program for Homewood City Schools. I have a B.S. in Physical Education from the University of North Alabama where I played collegiate basketball, a Masters in Kinesiology from the University of Montevallo, and a Leadership add-on certificate from Samford University. I am a Maddogg certified Spinning instructor and Schwinn Certified cycle instructor, and I am certified through the YMCA in cooperation with ACE as a Personal Trainer. My goal is to motivate, encourage and assist clients to reach their health and fitness goals.
My name is Sarah Higginbotham and I am a certified Personal Trainer at the Mountain Brook YMCA. My background consist of 13+ years of competitive gymnastics training and I'm currently studying to be a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. Areas of training I have a passion for are injury management and recover, high intensity interval training, and strength training (body building and olympic lifting). My personal achievements consist of becoming a level 9 gymnast as well as a CrossFit regional athlete. I feel confident to help my clients achieve their goals in a safe and timely manner. My name is Scott 'Old Navy' Hults. I am a retired US Navy Captain and former Fitness Director at the Greystone Family Branch YMCA. I hold Personal Training Certifications with the National Federation of Personal Trainers (NFPT) and the National Gym Association (NGA). I have more than 20 years of fitness experience. I am also a professional and world champion natural body builder. I specialize in strength training, conditioning, and physique transformation.
Small Group Personal Training (3-8 clients) is suitable for individuals who are seeking trainer designed, efficient workouts, and who welcome the motivation and accountability that a group provides.
This style of training requires participants to be familiar with cardiovascular and strength training prior to beginning sessions, as one-on-one attention is not available throughout the entire hour.
Participants must commit to attending all sessions as agreed upon by the trainer and participating clients.
New clients must have the trainer's approval before taking part in Small Group Personal Training sessions.
The Pilates Reformer is a machine with a moving carriage attached to cables and springs that can be adjusted for each participant. A variety of exercises can be performed on the reformer, each one designed to recruit stability from deep within the core. Participants will experience improved body awareness and posture as they practice, along with increased flexibility and balance.
We offer reformer trainging on an individual basis, or in a small group of 2, 3, or 4 people. Sessions are one hour in duration and are by appointment only.

*Camp Swim is Mon, Thur, and Fri from 10am to 11am. Also Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thur from 1 to 3pm. During camp swim they use 2 lanes for free swim and 1 lane for swim lessons.

Private Swim Lessons is just what you are looking for. You will receive 6 / 30 minute sessions with a certified swim lesson instructor. The classes will be scheduled at your convenience.
Please fill out the registration form and return it with your payment to the front desk or you can register on line. The Aquatics Department will contact you to confirm start time and date. It takes approximately 7-10 days to begin lessons once registered.
When registering, please indicate the days/times you are available for lessons, so we can better pair you with an instructor. Once registered you will be paired with an instructor (based off the availability you left with us and the instructor who has the best matching availability). The instructor will contact you to finalize your lesson times/days.

These lessons are ideal for 2 to 3 swimmers who swim at the same level. You will need to register with the other swimmer in your group. Our Parent—Child Swim Lessons are a very basic water safety course offered to help infants and children (6 months to 36 months) become more comfortable in the water and inform Parents of different aspects of swimming with younger children. Both the Child and the Parent participate in 4 class sessions that focus on a wide range of skills from simply entering the water with the Parent to blowing bubbles and kicking to going completely under water.
4 classes that are 30 minutes each

We have varying skill levels; everyone from former swimmers to triathletes to novice swimmers.
Practice is from 530a.m. - 630a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The Coach also emails out the workout for each day so you can have it if you are not coming in that day
Workouts typically range 3000-3500 yards. We’re flexible though often adjusting intervals, sets and distances to accommodate the varying abilities. Some swim the complete workout and some swim less.
Masters is $25 for members per month and $38 for nonmembers per month.
Payment is either due when you sign up and paid in advance for the number of months you are participating, or you can set it up on draft each month.
Karlyn Pipes is coming back to help y'all swim faster! If you missed her swim technique workshops over the past few years, NOW is your chance to catch up to all of your faster swim/tri friends.
Karlyn uses simple, easy to understand drills and techniques to help you swim faster right away. These are the same techniques she uses to break world records…and she just six new world records last month in Europe!
Karlyn will be offering two workshops mid-April at the Mountain Brook YMCA and is offering a $20 discount to Vulcan Tri club members. If you attend BOTH workshops you will receive Karlyn's Go Swim DVD…a $40 value.
Faster Freestyle on Wednesday, April 12th from 5:30-8:30 PM cost $95 for YMCA and Vulcan Tri Club members, and $115 all others. Space is limited.

Being a lifeguard can be a very challenging and rewarding job. This class will certify participants in Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid as well as AED.
Participants must attend all classes as well as pass a final written and water test.
Class Prerequisites - All participants must be 15 years old or older before the final exam, be able to swim 300 yards continuously (using freestyle and breast stroke), recover a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool and tread water with no hands for 2 minutes.
Must have 4 participants in a class in order to hold class. If the class does not have enough participants notification will be made the Monday prior to class beginning. You will have the option of a full refund or a transfer into another class.
Full Class: $220.00 ($70.00 due at registration) The $70 is a non-refundable fee (refunds will only be made if the YMCA cancels class).
Re-Certification Class $100 (must show non-expired certification).

The American Red Cross Community CPR / AED / 1st Aid course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until advanced medical help arrives. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will hold an adult, infant, child CPR/AED, and 1st Aid certification valid for two years.
Skills acquired in this course cannot be applied to a lifeguarding certification as this course certifies participants in rescue skills for lay responders not professional rescuers.

Tennis Lessons Flyer
Pam Wildt began her employment in October 2014 at the Mountain Brook Y as the Director of Tennis. She will be responsible for developing, maintaining and promoting all tennis programs to include leagues, round robins, clinics, mixers, camps for adults and youth and overall junior development.
Pam played collegiate tennis at Virginia Tech and received a BS degree in Exercise Science. Following graduation, she began her coaching career as a Graduate Asst Coach while working on her Master's in Community Health at Virginia Tech.
She continued her coaching career at East Tennessee State University where she was the Head Women's Tennis Coach from 1995-1999. She continued on as the Women's Head Coach at the University of Wyoming from 1999-2005. Upon relocating to Alabama she was the Head Tennis Pro at the Trussville YMCA from 2006-2014.
Pam brings a real passion for the game of tennis which is evident to her students and this passion along with her ability to effectively communicate with both adults and juniors enables her to generate enthusiasm to participate, compete, and have fun doing it.
Pam is USPTA Certified Professional.
Pam is married to Matt Wildt, Associate Athletic Director at UAB and has one child, Paige age 13. They currently reside in Homewood, Alabama.
Joe began employment at the Mountain Brook Y in September 2002 as the Assistant Tennis Professional. As Tennis Assistant, Joe is responsible for helping developing, maintaining, and promoting all tennis programs that include adult and junior clinics. Joe also does private lessons for kids and adults along with doing private team clinics. He is also responsible for stringing all the racquets for our tennis members.
Joe's tennis background is he played tennis at Vanderbilt University and the University of Alabama. Previously ranked #1 in Alabama in Men's 25, 35, and 40 singles. Joe was ranked #11 nationally in Men's 40 singles in 2000.
Joe started working as an Assistant at Mountain Brook Club for a couple years and then Head Pro for Greystone Y.
Joe is married to Marguerite Lane and has twins girls, Mary Elizabeth & Anna Louise, 14 years old. They currently reside in the Birmingham, Alabama.
Kayla has been on staff with the Mountain Brook Y since January 2014. Kayla began as a Tennis Desk Attendant and was promoted to Team Leader in November 2014. Kayla manages the tennis desk attendants and the tennis pro shop. She helps teach both women’s and junior clinics of all levels.
Kayla loves the game of tennis having played USTA Tennis since she was 7 years old. Kayla played for a highly competitive Texas high school program and went on to a career at Laredo Junior College. The Laredo Junior College team was ranked #6 in the US, Kayla played #3 tennis singles, #2 doubles for the Palominos.
Kayla received her BS in Kinesiology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 2015. Today, Kayla shares her passion of tennis with the Homewood High School Patriots where she coaches as the team pro for the Boys and Girls teams.
Kayla is USPTA Certified Recreational Coach.
Kayla is married to Josh Hagood and has 2 cats, Payton and Shadow. They currently reside in Mt. Olive, Alabama.
• To reserve an indoor or outdoor court, you MUST have the Tennis Membership Add on in ADDITION to your regularly monthly Birmingham Y membership. These two memberships are different.
Tennis add on fee is... $11 for individual membership, $16 for two people membership, and $19 for family membership.
If you are interested in adding a Tennis Membership to your account please obtain a Membership Change Form from either the Front Desk or Tennis Desk or contact the Business Office at firstname.lastname@example.org
If you would NOT like to add the tennis add on to your membership, you can NOT reserve a court, but may use our courts, if available. You will have to pay $7 guest fee, each time you come to play.
• All indoor or outdoor courts may be reserved for a maximum of 1.5 hours under one name. Any additional 30 minutes must be booked in another tennis membership's name.
A court reservation may be made up to one week in advance.
When booking a court, please have ready: You last name, first initial, and member number (the barcode located on the back of your scan card).
• If a Tennis Member decides to bring a guest, a tennis guest fee MUST be paid. The fee is $7 for the first 3 visits, then for the 4th-6th visit, they will have to pay additional Y day fee of $15 PLUS $7 for tennis guest fee...which is a TOTAL of $22. Additional courts fees may apply when playing indoors.
A non-Y member is only allowed to come 6 times through out the year, unless get approval by the Tennis Director, Pam Wildt.
Y members but WITHOUT the tennis add on will only have to pay $7 each time they decide to come and play. We highly encourage them to add tennis to membership if they come to play at least twice a month.
Tennis guests must be playing with a Y Tennis member, can't have 2 guest or 4 guests by themselves on the court without a tennis member.

*When done with the Ball Machine please pick up all balls and put them in the crates, roll the Ball Machine behind court 6,7 or 8 curtain, and return balls to the Tennis Desk, thank you.
*The Ball Machine cannot be booked at a time when the Tennis Desk is closed.
*Please ensure you are wearing flat soled tennis shoes while on the courts.
