We believe that if we foster a love for the sport, teach the fundamental skills to be successful, promote a healthy mind, body and spirit we can develop a complete athlete. Our program combines highly skilled staff coaches with volunteer coaches to ensure proper fundamental skill development. The program includes weekly skills/conditioning led by staff skills coaches, weekly practices led by volunteer coaches and individual/team instruction as needed. Each sport follows a progressive age related curriculum designed by the coaching staff.
Staff skills coaches have either collegiate playing or coaching experience- some have played professionally. Coaches design and follow a progressive age specific curriculum to ensure athletes and volunteer coaches learn the fundamental skills of their sport. The also serve as mentors for athletes who aspire to collegiate or professional play, they've been there- done that. Staff coaches will work together with volunteer coaches to demonstrate proper instruction and a progressive approach through weekly skills and conditioning sessions. Private instruction is also available for players and teams to correct or develop specific skills.
Volunteer coaches, coordinators and referees are essential to the success of YMCA sports programs. Volunteer coaches assist staff coaches in the weekly skills and conditioning sessions, lead the weekly team practice and weekly games. With the staff coaches guiding the program, volunteer coaches can feel supported and be a part of program with strong fundamental skill development.
Led by the staff skills coach with collegiate playing and/or coaching experience to teach the fundamental skills/conditioning in a progressive manner. Volunteer coaches can assist giving them the opportunity to learn the technical aspects of the sport alongside their players.

The inaugural season of competitive basketball left a new impression on the cities we played in. Our players had an incredible season, traveling to Atlanta, Cullman, Tuscaloosa and playing locally. Anyone you ask knows who the Hoover YMCA teams are, anyone who comes into the YMCA sees the trophies on the wall. 4th and 5th grade won several tournaments, placed in almost every tournament and the 4th grade finished their season with a YBOA state Championship!
The 10th grade team rocked that YBOA state champioship bringing home the big trophy! They also came in second place in the Super-Regional Event. They will be attending the AAU Supershowcase in Orlando this July.
PRACTICE AND CONDITIONING: Most practices are closed, meaning parents and siblings can watch from outside the gym. This is to ensure total concentration and no distractions. You can check with your team coach if you have questions. Conditioning times are REQUIRED for the players- they are listed by team at the bottom of the practice schedule. They should show up for conditioning sessions with regular athletic shoes on and BRING their basketball shoes. They also need a sweatshirt, as some of the conditioning may be outdoors.
INDEPENDENT strength training: Players may receive additional strength training assignments from their coach. Players are required to complete these assignments independently and report back to the coach.
Age AND GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Please click here to check AAU eligibility. Please click here to check YBOA eligibility.
FINANCIAL AID: Is available as well as payment plans. Financial aid application takes 3 weeks to process so please complete the application asap and submit it. Forms are available online, click here to print
TRAVEL REQUIRED: All travel is required unless absence is cleared in advance with the coach. Travel will be locally as far as Huntsville, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa and one to two out of state tournament in Georgia and/or Tennessee. On any tournament weekend we can have games Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please keep schedules open all three days. When we travel out of state we will ASK if we can avoid Friday games, but it is up to the tournament organizer.
SCHEDULE CHANGES: Please keep all weekends during the season as open as possible to allow for changes to the travel schedule. Tournaments can be cancelled for many reasons, and at times we may have to withdraw from a tournament for various reasons. If a tournament is cancelled or we withdraw, we may choose to play another tournament that same weekend, take the weekend off or play on an off weekend to make up the tournament. Game times are often changed at the last minute by tournament organizers- ALWAYS check and confirm game times on the FRIDAY of the tournament weekend to make sure you always have accurate information. Check email OFTEN.
