What's This Thingamajig?

Thingamajig® Invention Convention Returns July 22

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math - otherwise known as STEM - is everywhere. It shapes our everyday experiences and designs our future. STEM opens the doors to strategic thinking, creative expression and the best careers. At the YMCA, young people have numerous opportunities to learn, play and be inspired through STEM. The YMCA’s THINGAMAJIG® Invention Convention is just one example of how the YMCA of Greater Birmingham embraces education and fosters an interest in STEM in children of all backgrounds.

In its second year in Birmingham, the YMCA’s THINGAMAJIG® Invention Convention was created 22 years ago by the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington. A day long initiative that combines, active fitness and play, creative eco-art, and team challenges into one children focused festival, The THINGAMAJIG® Invention Convention, exposes children to STEM in a way that is hand-on, eye-opening, and, above all, fun.

The 2016 THINGAMAJIG® Invention Convention will bring together every child in the YMCA of Greater Birmingham’s Summer Day Camp program to Bill Harris Arena at the Crossplex on Friday, July 21. There, kids will participate in a number of educational activities invention challenge such as Trashion Fashion, a competition tasking these young people to create unique items out of recyclable materials. The event will also bring together volunteers from many local companies and partnering non-profits who will be on hand to lead activities and open minds to  all that is possible through science, technology engineering, and math.

“We are extremely excited about the opportunities we have to get children interested in STEM through Thingamajig®,” says Rhonda Elmore, Executive Director of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham Alabaster Branch and the lead staff member for THINGAMAJIG®. “We hope that this will become a signature event for the city and the Y as we work to improve educational opportunities for all children throughout Greater Birmingham."
