The new Afterschool Academy initiative at Walker County's Oakman Elementary School got off to a great start as more than 30 kids attended the first day on Monday, October 3. The after school program is the first of its kind in Walker County and is made possible thanks to a 21st Century Learning grant in partnership with United Way of Central Alabama and Walker County Schools.
"What a great opportunity for our Y to expand our footprint to an area that truly lacks resources for students during the crucial out of school time hours," said Rhonda Elmore, Executive Director of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham Alabaster Branch and a lead staff on education initiatives for the Y.
