Dear YMCA Members and Friends,
I hope this finds each of you well. We miss you and we are as anxious to serve YOU as you are to get back to your Y routine.
Following Governor Ivy’s recent Alabama Safer At Home Order, Y facilities and programs will remain closed through May 15th. We will continue to provide All Day Emergency Childcare for essential workers in 5 of our facilities and serve as sites for scheduled and necessary Red Cross Blood Drives while also continuing to provide our Virtual Fitness options. **(Please see below for more information on all of these services).
While we applaud and respect the guidelines proposed by the state of Alabama, the YMCA of Greater Birmingham will ultimately be following the guidance of the Jefferson County Department of Health and UAB Medicine. Our local situation is the most important gauge of when it will be prudent and safe to reopen.
We are carefully considering every operational aspect to determine when and how we reopen Y facilities. Public health and the safety of every member and staff is our number one commitment. We only have one opportunity to do this right, so we must make sure decisions are made that ensure the health and safety of our Y community. Opening our doors will require a commitment to rigorous safety protocols including sanitation and cleaning techniques, temperature checks, and social distancing plans.
Y staff and volunteers are anxious to open our doors to our members. We are working collaboratively with Y’s across America as we all seek the best solutions for reopening in a safe manner to our individual communities. We are working hard to ensure our facilities are thoroughly cleaned and are prepared to assist you and our staff to practice safe distancing.
The Y has long been much more than a gym: we are a connected community and service organization. Now, more than ever, we feel the weight of our responsibility to you, to the children, families, and seniors we serve, and to our communities at large. We will overcome these difficult challenges together.
We will stay in touch and communicate our plans in advance. We look forward to opening the Y again as soon as the health and safety of our community can be assured.
Thank you for your sustained membership and support during this critical time. Together we have filled a huge gap as we all fight through the challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic. We appreciate your patience and look forward to welcoming you back soon.
