Tips To Stay Motivated In The New Year

So many people make New Year's resolutions to get fit, however, it can be very hard to stay motivated. We at the YMCA of Greater Birmingham don't want you to give up. Here are a few tips to help you stay driven and on target to meet your wellness goals in 2017.

The Scale can be your biggest motivator if used right
Normal daily fluctuations, while completely normal, can be disheartening. Knowing this ahead of time can help you make realistic and attainable goals. Tip: Don't sweat the small stuff, and try not to weigh yourself every day.

Find an old pair of jeans or pants that are now too small
Dropping pounds is great, but fitting into your favorite pair of "skinny jeans" could be better. Use an old pair of pants or jeans as your gauge.  Try them on every 2-3 weeks to see your progress. When you don’t see movement on the scale, don't get disheartened. Remember, you are more active, watching what you eat, and progressing toward a HUGE life
change.

Take a class
The YMCA of Greater Birmingham offers almost 500 Group Exercise classes per week, all of which are free for members. Group Exercise is a great way to make friends, find accountability partners, and get started toward feeling healthier and stronger. Choose from classes like Y Cross, Barre, Yoga, Pilates, and the new indoor cycling experience, Y Ride.

Food Journaling
Whatever it takes, write down EVERYTHING.  Start with basic journaling, then progress toward making healthier choices.

Someone to depend on that depends on you.
Accountability 101: Find a Buddy. You can call your buddy, call the Y, or even another group member. If you find yourself wavering, an accountability partner can help. You won’t be inclined to skip your morning walk if your friend is depending on you.

Chart your activity

Along with Food Journaling, write down your workouts and most importantly, have a plan. You will be amazed at how fast you can build up your endurance.

Use Technology even if it scares you
The YMCA offers a MobileFit Program that helps you keep up with everything.  Fitness trackers are a great "tool".  Another great digital resource is MyFitnessPal. Try one of them out!

USE SMART GOALS
S– Specific
M– Measurable
A– Attainable
R– Realistic
T– Timely
