Three years ago I weighed nearly 300 pounds. I never imagined I could get to that point, but after college, marriage and career settled into place; my weight did just the opposite.
For years I had focused on my family and job - and not on my health. As an educator, I should've known better. But cultivating knowledge doesn't hold us accountable, and service to others doesn't require us to care for ourselves. So I didn't.
Slowly my weight increased, and I found myself in my mid-forties on five medication a day for blood pressure, acid reflux, and cholesterol. Nights I spent strapped to a breathing machine.
I made two very smart decisions. First, I underwent gastric sleeve surgery. Next, I found a personal trainer at the Mountain Brook Y named Kerry, who taught me how to exercise, lose weight, build muscle, and increase my endurance. He met me where I was - weak, discouraged, and overweight - and helped me find the confidence I needed to believe in myself.
In the last two years, I've lost 100 pounds, and am totally off medications. I'm so thankful for the advice and encouragement of the Mountain Brook Y - I now volunteer at the branch that has blessed my life in every way.
