Life was tough for my 15-year old son and me when we first moved to Birmingham. Coming all the way from Michigan, we had no family or friends in the area to help us settle in. As a single parent, my income was barely enough to keep food on the table, let alone furnish our small apartment. We were in desperate need of help, friendship, and sense of belonging.
My son had seen the Northeast Y near our home and asked if we could go by and see if there were other kids his age. I was hesitant because I knew we couldn't afford to join, and I didn't want to disappoint him. I had also seen their pool and was afraid for him to get near it since he'd never learned to swim. After several stressful and lonely weeks, I decided we would give the Y a try.
The friendly staff welcomed us and immediately started working with me on a scholarship award for membership. They enrolled my son in the Safety Around Water program and then swim lessons. Thanks to the Y, we have found our new home.
