Long before he was old enough to attend, my son Charles wanted to go to Summer Day Camp. Hargis Retreat held all the charm and activity a three-year-old boy could ask for: swimming, fishing, and frog-catching. Charles couldn't wait to turn six to go to camp. We know this because he told us which was actually a pretty big deal.
My son suffers from selective mutism, a rare anxiety disorder in children that makes it difficult (or impossible) for him to speak to most people. I knew camp would be challenging for Charles, but until I picked him up that first day, I didn't realize how much. For several hours afterward, he couldn't even speak to me.
But we kept at it. For the rest of that week and every summer since Charles has returned to Hargis Retreat. The staff at Hargis never gave up on us. This year, thanks to specialized therapy and the love and support of his dedicated Hargis counselors, our son broke his silence at camp for the first time!
For his tremendous breakthrough, Charles received a special award for "Brave Talking." It's hard for us to find words that say "Thank You" enough to the Y and Hargis Retreat.
