Summer in the South is all about swimming and fun in the sun - except to my family. I grew up with parents who didn't know how to swim. In fact, the idea of swimming simply wasn't part of the culture in the community I grew up in. The water was something to be feared.
Now I have a grown daughter of my own and I have passed that fear of the water to her. We never had the opportunity to enjoy the fun and healthy benefits of swimming, and we were on course to pass on the cycle of fear to my granddaughter.
This summer my daughter and I said "Enough! We're earning to swim!" My daughter and I signed up for the Safety Around Water program at the YMCA Youth Center and I am so glad we took that leap of faith! Despite having not swimming ability to start with, and barely being able to put our faces into the water, we started to compete with each other to see who could learn to swim first. Now we can make sure our little ones stay safe and enjoy the water with us as a family.
MISSION: To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
