A Message of Hope
From Dan Pile, YMCA President and CEO
June 2, 2020
Dear Members, Staff, Volunteers and Y Supporters,
Like many, I feel a bit speechless but also need to find a voice! A voice which I hope will not be drowned out by the violence and destruction we have witnessed in our own great city and around the nation. I do not want the protests and what they really stand for to be overshadowed by images of chaos.
You may be one like me, who longs to be a part of the solution to an issue which has plagued our nation and our community for hundreds of years. The reality is, few of us can really fully understand the pent-up emotions caused not just by the killing of George Floyd but the many others who have been killed and or oppressed by an unjust society and systematic racism.
We have a long way to go and so much more to do to ensure that everyone regardless of one’s race, color, or creed has the same opportunity to reach their God given full potential.
Since 1884 the YMCA of Birmingham has served as a beacon of hope and will continue to be so. We maintain our commitment to equality and inclusiveness which is woven into the fabric of strong communities. No pandemic or a human tragedy will cause us to stray from our mission: “To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.”
These are not mere words. They serve as our moral compass and daily guide. It is our love for others and work for a more just and inclusive society that will continue to uniquely define us. We are more determined than ever to continue to serve as a beacon of hope for those seeking acceptance, those seeking to serve, and those seeking to belong.
This reminds me of the words found in Isaiah 40:5
“The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Notice it does not say some, it says “ALL.”
Please join us as we stand in solidarity with our many community partners to put an end to injustice and disparity.
