10 Creative (& Easy!) Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

By Jean Bowick

For those of you who have bemoaned the evil, inevitable weight gain that comes around at 30, again at 40 … and knocks you fat at 50, listen up.

There is hope for the middle-aged, soft-bellied and ridiculously out of shape. Forget all the disagreeable dialogue you’ve tried to stomach over the years – mixed missives on weight loss and (evil) weight gain – relentlessly streaming into the homes of the chronically overweight through the frustrating prevalence of TV talk shows and infomercials.

For anyone struggling with the stubborn weight gain that comes with getting older, we have good news! It is possible to kick-start your metabolism and have it up and running again … in just one day!

Most of our body's metabolic performance is driven by our genetics and other factors that we cannot control. However, a good portion of our metabolic efficiency is determined by us, specifically, by our lifestyle and diet.

An article posted by Prevention.com outlines 10 ways to crank up your metabolism in one day, using a simple 16-hour plan. Ready? Let’s go!

  1. Good morning, sunshine! Sun exposure early in the morning helps regulate your metabolism and sets your body clock on schedule for a great day.
  2. Wake up and work out! Studies show you burn more calories during the day in the hours following intense exercise.
  3. Eat protein in the morning. Breakfast is king, and adding more protein at breakfast gives you better glycemic control throughout the day.
  4. Morning tea, not coffee. Tea is full of antioxidants that boost your metabolism … and each cup delivers a solid caffeine kick.
  5. Stand while you’re talking. Talking on your feet for an hour burns about one-third more calories than talking while you’re sitting down.
  6. Avoid artificial sweeteners. They’re not real, and they really don’t help your metabolism process natural sugars effectively.
  7. Eat some chocolate! That’s right, ladies! Eating a small amount of dark chocolate each day helps regulate your metabolism and lower your stress levels … win-win! (And it’s yummy!)
  8. Laugh loud and often. Laughter is good medicine for you and your metabolism – it burns more calories and helps keep your heart healthy (and happy)!
  9. Take it easy … and kick stress in the butt! Make a point to relax and unwind at the end of the day – listen to music, read, or take a hot bath. Women who are stressed burn 100 fewer calories during the day than women who find quality time to kick back.
  10. Good night, sleep tight. Get at least eight good hours of sleep each night. People who prioritize proper sleep have higher metabolisms and fewer unhealthy food cravings during the day.
