Birmingham YMCA Code of Conduct

At the YMCA of Birmingham, we expect staff, members and guests to behave in accordance with our mission and values at all times respecting the rights and dignity of others.

At the YMCA we demonstrate

Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Honesty by:


Speaking in respectful tones, refraining from the use of vulgar or derogatory language, and dressing appropriately.

Resolving conflicts in a respectful, honest and caring manner; never resorting to physical contact or threatening gestures.

Respecting others by refraining from intimate behavior in public; abstaining from contact of a sexual nature.

Respecting the property of others; never engaging in theft or destruction.

Creating a safe, caring environment; never carrying firearms or weapons.

Participating in programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body; never engaging in the use, sale, dispensing or possession of illegal drugs or narcotics or the unsanctioned use of alcohol on YMCA premises.

Adherence to the YMCA Code of Conduct and regulations is essential. Noncompliance may result in suspension or termination of YMCA employment and / or membership privileges.


Membership Information:
Accommodating our members is every staff person's goal, but specific membership information and questions will be handled by our membership staff. Questions about current membership, please contact the Business Office (205) 445-2850. Sign up for programs will be handled by the front desk staff at the program registration desk.

Draft account changes:
Please contact your branch membership director or the central business office to make changes to your draft on file used for automatic membership, programs or retail payments .
Termination of Membership:
After the initial 30-day period any membership resignation shall be effective thirty (30) days after receipt of written notification. Conditions of Membership:
For safety, emergency and security reasons, all members MUST present their membership card at the front desk when using the facility or participating in a program.

Membership privileges and cards are not transferable.

Membership dues, joining fees and program fees are subject to change.

Lost cards will be replaced by the membership staff; there is a $5.00 replacement fee.

Due to seasons and member traffic, individual branches may place specific restrictions on time and days that guest may visit.

The Birmingham YMCA Association reserves the right to revoke any membership.

The protection of our members and guest participating in our programs and/or using the facilities is paramount interest of the Birmingham YMCA Association. The Birmingham YMCAs reserves the right to deny access to membership to any person who has been accused or convicted of any crime involving sexual abuse; is a registered sex offender; habitually or excessively uses narcotics or dangerous drugs; has even been convicted of any offense relating to the use, sale, possession, or transportation of narcotics or habit forming and/or dangerous drugs; or continuously or excessively use intoxicating beverages.

Lost and Found
Items left in the facility will be held for a period of time prior to being donated. To claim an item the member/guest must come to the facility and identify the item. No confirmations will give over the phone.

YMCA is not responsible for damage, lost or stolen articles of clothing or any other personal property of any member or guest.

Facility Rules
Positively no smoking or tobacco products, alcohol throughout the facility and YMCA grounds.

No food or drinks (excluding water in water bottles) in locker rooms, exercise areas, or gymnasium.

No profanity or abusive language.

No radios or tape players with headsets in exercise areas, except those used by YMCA instructors for class.

Shirt and shorts, or warm ups, and athletic shoes are required in all parts of the building.

Towels should be returned to the service counter receptacles after use. (Removal of towels or program supplies from the building warrants immediate forfeiture of membership privileges.)

Non-marking gym shoes are required on all courts.

Members are responsible for guests and their behavior.

Bathing suits (no cut offs) are required for swimming, steam and sauna areas.

Please report violations of the rules or damaged equipment to the local branch staff.

At no time are children under the age of 14 allowed to be dropped off and left unattended in the facility except during supervised youth programs.
