Did you know that modern swim instruction was invented at the YMCA? Maybe that’s why so many people trust the YMCA and continue to come back to enjoy our outstanding facilities and programs.

The Shades Valley Family YMCA has open registration for the YMCA Swim Lesson Program. This unique program is designed to teach kids and adults how to be safe in and around the water.

Private Lesson Registration Information

The Shades Valley Family YMCA offers private and semi-private lessons for swimmers age 18 months & up. These 30-minute lessons are customized to meet individual needs of every swimmer. Anyone wanting to further advance their or their child’s swimming skills will benefit from private lessons. For more information, contact the Shades Valley Family YMCA at (205) 870.9622.

GROUP SWIM LESSON SKILL AND AGE LEVEL DISTINCTIONS

PARENT/CHILD (6 – 36 months)
This course is not designed to teach your child how to swim, but to focus on water adjustment. This class requires that the parent and child be in the water during lessons. There are no skills required. Class provides acclimation to water, blowing bubbles, jumping, introduction to front crawl, assisted back float, and skill development through games and songs. Class also includes safety education to parents and the basic tools to prepare the child for further swimming development.

PIKE (3-5 years old)
Beginner
Skill required: Water readiness
In-class: Will learn to blow bubbles, put face in water and proper kicking, paddling, and front and back crawl

EEL (3-5 years old)
Advanced Beginner
Skill required: Put face in water, float on back and front with assistance, and swim 5 feet without assistance
In-Class: Will learn to bob, kick on back, front and back float, swim without assistance 15 feet

RAY (3-5 year olds)
Intermediate
Skill required: Swim without assistance 15 feet, float on front and back, jump into water without help
In-Class: Will learn to front crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke, treading water, synchronized swimming skills

STARFISH (3-5 year olds)
Skill required: Tread water, swim 25 feet with front crawl stroke, swim on back, and jump in deep end
In-Class: Will learn survival float, kneeling and standing dives, coordination of front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl 25 yards

POLLIWOG (6+ years)
Beginner
Skill required: No skill required
In-Class: Will be introduced to front crawl, kick on front and back, front and back floats, putting face in water and personal water safety skills.

GUPPY (6+ years)
Advanced Beginner
Skill required: Blow bubbles, put face in water, float on front and back, front and back crawl without assistance
In-Class: Will learn to tread water, rudimentary 25 yd front and back crawl, breastroke introduction, jump into deep end, kneeling dive

MINNOW (6+ years)
Intermediate
Skill required: Rudimentary 25 yd front and back crawl, jump into deep end, tread water for 30 secs
In-Class: Will build endurance; reinforce fundamentals of front crawl, elementary backstroke, standing dives

FISH (6+ years)
Advanced
Skill required: Swim 2 lengths each front and back crawl in strong form. Can dive into deep end
In-Class: Will perform 50 yds each: breastroke, sidestroke, and open turns

ADULT
Skill required: No skill required-tailored to individual
In-Class: Will learn floating, front crawl, back crawl, rhythmic breathing, safety with stroke development and endurance.
