Emily and Joshua Powell have practically grown up in the YMCA. Now high school students at Ramsay High School in Birmingham, the siblings started attending after school programming at the YMCA of Greater Birmingham Youth Center not long after the branch opened its doors a decade ago.
Their mother Sandra, a nurse, and her husband, a Birmingham police officer, work long, irregular hours and rely on the Youth Center staff to reinforce the values the Powell’s instill in their children at home.
“The Youth Center has been very supportive of us and has provided a safe place for my children to go after school,” Sandra Powell said. Her kids have also participated in summer day camp, sports, and teen development programs. She said the Youth Center staff has been a valued partner ensuring her children receive academic assistance, positive role models, and character development.
“The counselors here are awesome and have been like aunts and uncles to my children and have watched them grow,” Powell said.
