Spring, “Canes” 4th & 5th grade competitive teams

Join us in welcoming the inaugural competitive basketball season at the Hoover YMCA! As pilot teams, players will have a chance to open the doors to future teams to play as YMCA teams in competitive tournaments. Players practice 3 times a week and play in local and regional YBOA, AAU and private tournaments. Both teams are performing very well at tournaments in Alabama and Georgia. Come out and support the teams....wear orange!!

2012 Spring Schedule & Results

  • March 9 – 10 Annual Tuscaloosa Invitational, Tuscaloosa: 4th Grade won championship, undefeated.
  • March 16 – 18 Heat Jam Tournament, Cullman: 4th grade won championship, undefeated. 5th grade won one, lost two.
  • March 23 – 25 11th Annual Hotlanta Invitational, Atlanta: 4th grade won championship, undefeated. 5th grade won two, lost two.
  • March 30 – April 1 Southern Spring Invitational, Alabama Premier Birmingham: 4th grade won championship, undefeated. 5th grade won one, lost three, made it to the semi-finals 
  • April 6 – 7 (Easter) OFF
  • April 13 – 15 Alabama Hustlers Magic City Rumble, Birmingham: 4th grade took second place, 5th grade made it to the semi-finals
  • April 20 – 22 Young Stars Invitational, Birmingham: 4th grade took third place, 5th grade won first place!!
  • April 27 – 29 5th Annual Super Shootout, Birmingham: 4th and 5th grade both won the championship!!Second win in a row for 5th grade!
  • May 4 – 6 Dick's Sporting Goods Jam Slam Tournament,  Birmingham
  • May 11 – 12 Annual Spring Slam Fest, Birmingham
  • May 18 – 20 Boys State Tournament, Birmingham
  • May 25 – 27 4th Annual Gulf Coast Challenge, Gulf Shores

Spring & Fall, Developmental Program

3rd grade-5th grade

Practice twice a week with staff skills coaches. Work on fundamental skills, positioning on offense and defense, basketball terminology and sport specific conditioning. Program designed to bridge the gap between rec ball and competitive ball. Spring semester runs from March-May. Fall semester will run from mid August-mid October.***can join mid-semester.

Fee: $200 for members, $250 for non-members. Fee pays for staff skills coaches twice a week. If tournament play is pursued additional fundraising may be needed. ****if joining mid semester pricing can be pro-rated.

Format: 2 practices per week and weekly scrimmages when possible.

Staff: Staff skills coaches and volunteer coaches will run both practices.

Summer, Juniors "Keep Your Hands on the Ball"

2nd-8th grade***Grade entering in Fall of 2012****

Staff skills coaches lead weekly skills sessions grouped by age, not by team. Scrimmages are casual on Saturday mornings- teams are formed with whoever is available to play that week. Space is limited, preference for current YMCA basketball program participants.

2nd-3rd Grade, Wed 6-7:00pm
4th-5th Grade, Monday 7-8:00pm
6th-8th Grade, Sunday 5-6:00pm

Registration: Now-May 15th
Semester dates: May 28th-July 28th
Fee: Member $85, Non-Member $125

Summer, High School  Summer League

9th-12th Grade. ***Grade entering in Fall of 2012****(Graduated seniors can play if they are 18yrs old or younger)

Staff skills coach, will lead weekly practices during the day...midday- not too early, so you can sleep in! Games are Fridays between 12-4pm. Space is limited to six teams, preference for current YMCA basketball program participants- register now before it fills up! Choose your team by the practice time.

Thursday 2:00pm or 3:00pm

Games: Fridays between 12-4pm

Year Round, INDIVIDUAL Skills Coaching

Staff skills coaches are available for private and clinic instruction year round for player or team development in specific skills. Sessions are focused, individualized and tailored to the player's position.  

MEMBER Cost: (30 minute sessions) $165 for 5 sessions, $290 for 10 sessions or $420 for 15 sessions (60 minute sessions) $270 for 5 sessions, $490 for 10 sessions or $705 for 15 sessions

NON-MEMBER Cost: (30 minute sessions) $220 for 5 sessions, $410 for 10 sessions or $585 for 15 sessions (60 minute sessions) $325 for 5 sessions, $610 for 10 sessions, $885 for 15 sessions
