The Hoover Family Branch has one chlorine recreation pool, a splash pad, a whirlpool and a steam room. The recreation pool is 25 yards long, with a depth range of 3-6.5 feet. It is covered in the off-season for year-round availability. The family whirlpool and family steam room is located outside the locker room.
It is the goal of the Birmingham YMCA to make sure that everyone who participates in our aquatics programing is safe. These Swim test guidelines are one way to help ensure our goal is met.
All swim tests are conducted by the certified lifeguard on duty.
The participant must jump into the deep end of the pool, tread water for 30 seconds and swim on top of the water approximately 25 yards without stopping or touching bottom/sides of pool.
If the participant passes the test, he or she will receive a green wristband and may swim free in the pool.
If the participant does not pass the test or does not want to take the test, he or she will receive a red wristband and will need to do one of the following: the participant must wear a life jacket; or if no life jacket is worn, an adult 18 or older must be in the pool with the participant no more than an arm's length away.
All participants under 14 must follow these guidelines.
***Please note- it is the Birmingham YMCA Association's policy to only allow coastguard approved flotation devices in the pool. No inflatables of any kind allowed.
We offer pool parties by reservation only.
Parties are scheduled in two hour time slots, including pool and party room time. You may bring your own food, drink, paper goods and party decorations to make your day special. A lifeguard will be assigned to your party to monitor and coordinate the kids. See the Birthday Party brochure for time options and prices.
Prices are based on a 2 hour party with 1hour and 15 minutes in the pool and 45 minutes in a party room.
***For the months of May (15th on) June, July & 1st half of August we only do after hour rentals.

Swim Birmingham YMCA is a year-round program offering training for beginners through national level competitive swimmers. SBY’s certified coaches will dramatically improve your child’s swimming ability while maintaining a focus on the YMCA’s core character values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. SBY competes in both USA Swimming meets, as well as YMCA competition.
Swimmers are organized by age and are grouped within those divisions by ability. There will be lanes for each age group with varying levels of practice difficulty. SBY offers practice days from two to six days a week. Practices are Monday thru Saturday after school; times will vary depending on group placement. The beginner to the most experienced swimmer will be challenged while perfecting their technique and building endurance, all while having fun!
We are a competitive swim team. We offer groups specifically designed for competitive swimmers who are seeking to swim at a National and State Level. Participation in our Senior groups will require more of your child's time and dedication. These swimmers will be required to sign a "Code of Conduct" contract to be held accountable for how they act and represent SBY. Additionally, these swimmers will be expected to maintain a certain GPA at school and obtain volunteer hours around the city.
