The YMCA strives to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. We emphasize teamwork, good sportsmanship, self esteem and a respect for one another. YMCA Youth Sports leagues are different from competitive club leagues in that everyone receives equal practice and play time. We’ve also modified each sport to make it safer and enjoyable. Through our sports programs, we grow all participants regardless of ability, gender, race, or religious creed. We encouraging parents and coaches to support our kids with positive reinforcement and believe competition is a positive process, but kept in the right perspective.
Safety First!
YMCA Youth Sports programs in partnership with the CDC is conducting an educational initiative to help coaches and parents alike recognize and respond to concussions. Coaches are mandated to take the Online Course and send in the certification form. All parents of registered players are asked to read and sign the Concussion Awareness Form and return it to the coach prior to the first practice / game. Learning about the signs and steps to respond to head injuries, will allow everyone to play safe. Remember: If you think your athlete has sustained a concussion, take him/her out of play!.
Youth Development
We offer multiple sports, sports clinics, fitness and general interest programs designed around and for kids ranging in age from 3- 16 year old, managed by YMCA staff and outside 'speciality' trainers. For a complete listing of all youth activities for the year. Please open this: Youth Activities.
For more intensive youth fitness development our Fit Kids Club is a strength and fitness course designed for Boys and Girls between the ages of 11-13. Please open this: Fit Kids Club
Our League
YMCA youth sports register players whether you are a YMCA member or not and play among other YMCA branches. Our leagues are divided into age-ranges or grade (3-16yo) and are both co-ed and gender specific. Registration is on-line (first-come) and you select the practice day (Team) convenient. Our leagues are officiated with experienced YMCA staff. Our coaches are volunteers and given tools to make their efforts pay off. Flag Football, Soccer and Girls Volleyball are offered in the Spring and Fall. Baseball is a summer sport and basketball is offered in the winter months. We do not allow players currently in other same sport leagues, to enroll. Weather Conditions: If weather becomes an issue, call our weather Hot Line: 685-6530. Call your coach or YMCA branch. Final decisions to play will be determined (60) minutes prior to game time.
Field Locations / Gymnasium Locations
Our team sports use several local area fields. Field assignments are determined after registration closes for each sport. Sports that require gymnasium are held at either the Greystone or Pelham YMCA.
What's included in the program fees?
All our Sports leagues include: Registration onto a roster, (10) practice weeks and (8) concurrent game weeks, full uniforms and player achievement medallions.
Coaches wanted!
Coaches: Important Information. All coaches must take the Free Concussion Awareness Course. Upon completion of the 40 minute on-line course, print, sign and return the certificate to your sports director. No coach is allowed to assume his/her role until the certificate is returned.
Games Approach to Better Coaching - Concussion Awareness Tips. Nutrition for Young Athletes- Coaches Request Forms- The success of our youth sports programs depends on volunteer coaches and keeping them informed. Our branch now offers a comprehensive sports orientation and training/clinic course for each of our (5) core sports. Open the sports league pages and take the courses. Note: All teams must have a volunteer coach. Teams absent a coach, will be split onto teams where a coach is in place (roster size permitted). Refunds are offered.
Weather Up-Dates
For all YMCA field sports leagues, the decision to cancel based on poor field conditions or rain, will be made (60) minutes prior to your game start time. Assume all games will be played. Participant's Code of Conduct
All YMCA Youth Sports depend on all participants to behave in accordance with common-sense responsibility and character. To codify our expectations, we have adopted a Code Of Conduct policy whose guidlines are a minimum listing, but is not limited to, best practices for a rewarding and pleasureable experience for all. In those situations where behavior is deemed outside of our core values, and directed to either fellow participants, family members, staff or officials, the YMCA reserves the right and responsibility to dis-associate our program from that individual(s). Coaches are mandated to read, sign and return this form prior to coaching any team within the Birmingham YMCA branches.
