My name is Ray Davenport, Healthy Living Director at the Downtown YMCA. I developed my love for fitness while studying Exercise Science at Auburn University where I obtained my B.S. in 2008. I have been educating clients in the YMCA (Chattanooga, Nashville, Birmingham) for over 6 years as an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer. As a high-level ultimate frisbee player, my training style is centered on correcting imbalances and improving stability and mobility through functional training. The key to living well is moving well and everyone can improve the way they move!
My name is Mike Montenegro and I am the Membership Director at the DT YMCA Branch. I'm also a part-time Personal Trainer. My love for fitness started as a 10 year-old child, after going to the library and checking out my first Arnold Schwarzenegger book. At the time, my parents couldn't afford to buy any weightlifting equipment, so I did a lot of body weight exercises, (push-ups, pull-ups, and dips), and I continue to use them with my clients, today. I am Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) as well as Fitness Nutrion Specialist (FNS) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). I'm also a certified Level I Coach for USAW (United States of America Weightlifting). My specialty is functional training, and I teach and develop functional strength, that is specific in our day to day activities.
My name is Brett Andrews, and I am a personal trainer at the DT YMCA. My passion for fitness began in November 2010, when a near stroke led me to evaluate my lifestyle choices. Over the next three years, I shifted my whole lifestyle to lose 100 lbs, lower my blood pressure, and pack on lean muscle by focusing on diet first, then exercise. This experience helped me to develop my “Baby Steps” approach to training—baby steps of progress can lead to massive results over time. I am a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and Group Personal Training Specialist (GPTS) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. My specialties lie in weight loss, injury rehabilitation, and weight training for women over 35.
Hello my name is Chris Layton, Personal Trainer and Group X instructor. In my early adult years I was very active and as time went on my activity slowed and I gain weight every year, until I reached a massive 355lbs. Through the struggles of being morbidly obese and all the heath issues that go along with it. I worked way back to good health and lost 165bls. I truly understand what it's like to struggle with being unhealthy and getting strong and fit again. As a 50 year old I know what it takes for us that have older bodies to get in shape. That's my passion and mission, to take the journey with you. We all have a story and through determination and some healthy fun, we can all have a happy ending to our story.
My name is Susan Putnam and I am a personal trainer here at the downtown Y. I have loved exercise most of my life and started as a runner many years ago. You should see all my Peachtree Road Race t-shirts! My professional life started as a Medical Technologists working at different hospitals in Atlanta, GA. About 35 years ago I started exercising at local gyms and met a trainer who convinced me to begin my personal training career. I was first certified by ISSA and then ISSA Senior Fitness. When I retired from the medical profession 11 years ago, I moved to Birmingham and started training more full time. I then became certified by ACE and am now working on ACE's Senior Fitness program. I am a senior and enjoy working with others who are in my age bracket. I also have fun teaching Silver Sneakers at the downtown Y.
My name is Chris McBride, and I am an ACE certified personal trainer at the downtown YMCA. I developed my love for fitness in 2002 when I began playing ultimate frisbee. After years of prioritizing cardiovascular conditioning and endurance and battling numerous sports-related injuries, I discovered the value of movement quality and strength training. I specialize in barbell training, teaching proper movement patterns and building strength for daily life.
