The YMCA of Greater Birmingham's 2017 Safety Around Water Summer Program has come to a close after another highly successful - and certainly impactful summer. During two separate sessions in June and July, this summer's free program educated 544 children and 119 adults about the importance of water safety and provided water safety lessons at the downtown Youth Center and the Northeast Branch.

"Whether it was learning to jump in and turn safely back to the side or learning to put your face in the water and then finding yourself being able to swim the width of the pool by the end of the week; all levels and ages made great progress!" said Susan Becker, Executive Director of YMCA of Greater Birmingham's Mountain Brook Branch and lead staff volunteer for the program. "We saw many familiar faces from our last few years and we know that if we did not offer this program these participants would not have access to lifesaving instruction."

Through Safety Around Water, parents and caregivers are encouraged to help their children learn fundamental water safety and swimming skills. During the eight-day course, they learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected water situations -- from how to reach the water’s surface if they submerge to safely reaching a pool’s edge or exiting any body of water.

"The mantra of the program is NEVER GIVE UP," said Becker. She shares a success story of a mother and daughter team who signed up for the program together. "Neither had any swimming ability and it quickly became a contest to see who could learn to swim the fastest! Day 1 they were barely comfortable putting their faces in the water and after 3 days they were both able to swim 15 yards unassisted! Now they know they can keep the kids and grand kids safe around water because of what they were able to accomplish!"

Thank you to the entire Safety Around Water Team and all the lifeguards and swim instructors who keep us safe everyday!  Thanks for sharing your time and talents!
