The YMCA of Greater Birmingham hosted this free “thank you” event for the community – a testament that YMCA is dedicated to supporting health and wellness for all.

Birmingham, Alabama – The YMCA of Greater Birmingham hosted its Inaugural Health & Fitness Fair on Friday, October 6, 2017, as an association-wide event. All branches participated city-wide either as a host or partner to provide a wide array of wellness resources.

YMCA branches will be offered everything from free health screenings, pediatric dental care, and flu shots to free personal training sessions and chair massages. The YMCA Vestavia branch also offered pneumonia immunizations, and several branches will had pharmacists on site to give personal nutrition tips, healthy snack samples and blood pressure tests.

The Hoover branch had Trak Shak providing free foot impressions for insight into foot pressure when someone is exercising. “Knowing your foot type is useful for knowing which type of footwear will provide the best support and balance during fitness,” according to Cindy Reams, Membership Director and Y fitness instructor. “These impressions help clue you in on whether you have normal, flat, or high-arched feet as well.”

YMCA Mountain Brook branch called on the community to “bring in your old bikes!” for the Redemptive Cycles “re-cycling” program that will donate and help others in the community. “We love this unique opportunity to partner with local businesses to expose our members to neighborhood resources that can compound the benefits of exercise on their overall health,” said Michelle Varnell, Membership Director. “Our local vendors have been really eager to participate – we’ve got a lot of love in this community!”

Underlying this event is the YMCA’s strong commitment to building a healthy community, and ensuring people have access to wellness resources that become an important part of their lifestyle. “We’ve had a lot of fun planning this event because of how seriously we take this endeavor,” explained Dawn Pilleteri, Membership Director of YMCA’s Shades Valley branch. “Many of the resources offered at the fair, like Blood Pressure Management and Personal Fitness, are available at the Y every day.”

Other branch activities included Alabama Allergy and Asthma Center, dermatologist consultations, healthy food samples, fabulous prizes and much more. For more information and details on the offerings by each YMCA of Greater Birmingham branches visit http://www.ymcabham.org/health-fair.
