To our YMCA friends and community,
We hope you and your family are healthy and safe during this very difficult time for our community and country. For 136 years, the YMCA of Greater Birmingham has served our city, adapting to meet changing needs. Today, the needs in our community are urgent, as the coronavirus, State Health Orders limiting or closing businesses, and unavailability of community services affect families, seniors and individuals.
Despite our doors being temporarily closed, the YMCA continues to serve and have tremendous impact. The Y is meeting the unprecedented challenges the pandemic presents to provide basic needs, address gaps in service and strengthen our community through efforts that promote connection and caring for one another.
Continuing to serve during this time presents many challenges, including securing necessary funding. Our organization is experiencing a significant revenue loss from temporarily closing our Y branches. The Y is investing its human and financial resources to provide support that is critical to helping others during this time.
While the Y is closed, first responders, healthcare and other essential workers are receiving needed YMCA childcare services as they selflessly serve our family members, relatives, friends, and neighbors. Y staff are calling on seniors, blood drives are being scheduled, and the Y is offering resources for your well-being, including online classes.
Many of you have come forward to ask how you can help during this time. We appreciate this, even with uncertainty about the future. We are turning to individuals, foundations and corporate partners for philanthropic support. There are two immediate ways you can help:
First, stay with us and continue to support the Y mission. Unless you have contacted our Member Accounts office and requested otherwise, your membership is active and scheduled for normal payment processing for April, 2020. Please consider continuing your membership as a sustaining partner in our mission and cause. Your dues will be designated as a donation and converted into a much-needed contribution while we are closed. We will follow up with the process to document this for your taxes once we resume more full-scale operations.
If you are not able to retain your membership as a donation during this uncertain time, we understand and ask you to consider putting your membership on a free hold instead of canceling. A hold on your membership signals to us that you are still with us, which matters to us as well. Membership options and contact information can be found here. Our mission calls us to be there for you when we reopen, and we humbly and respectfully ask you to be there, too.
Secondly, I invite you to make a direct donation if it is within your means. Simply click here and make your donation online. One hundred percent of your donation will go to the community’s emergency needs provided by YMCA staff. I’ve increased my pledge and invite you to join me.
Now, more than ever, we need you to STAY WITH US to continue to provide needed services, support those on the front lines of our Emergency childcare, as well as essential infrastructure needed to ensure you can return to the YMCA you know and love as quickly as possible. Your membership dollars are crucial during this time.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this appeal. Please stay safe, keep us in prayer, and we look forward to seeing you again soon. We are doing our very best in a very challenging time. If we make a mistake please let us know and trust we will make it right as soon as possible.
With heartfelt gratitude,
President and CEO
