I was born at Brookwood Hospital just up the hill from the Shades Valley YMCA. There was no way for my family to know then just how big a part the Y would play in my life.
I practically grew up at the Y. From my earliest months as a baby being looked after in the nursery, I continued on through middle school in the Afterschool Academy. I then earned a leadership role as a volunteer counselor-in-training, and finally achieved a job working as a Y Summer Day Camp counselor during college.
The Y has always been a large part of my life, so much so that I found time to volunteer at the Washington, D.C., YMCA while attending Howard University. I was recently accepted to law school at the University of Alabam, a lifelong dream. However, it came with a catch - time did not allow for me to work at the Y this summer!
Those years at the Y include some of my fondest memories, like singing "Princess Pat," playing capture the flag and helping your people with homework. Looking back on that time, however, I realize the Y prepared me for an even bigger journey...life.
