My daughters and I moved to Alabam from Washington with neither the financial resource nor a place to live. My two low-paying jobs barely paid our rent, and we needed help with furniture, clothing and safe activities for my girls. My oldest daughter was suffering from depression, and my youngest, whom I adopted when she was a baby, was born addicted to heroin and was in desperate need of some normalcy and friendship. Thankfully, I decided to reach to the Greystone Y.
They welcomed us with open arms!
I have been able to use scholarships to lower my membership fees and childcare expenses. My youngest is attending YMCA Afterschool Academy every day and loves it. She has many new friends she gets to see every day.
The friendly staff began mentoring my oldest daughter immediately, She's been given a leadership position which offers her the opportunity to impact younger students as a positive role model. Eventually, we'll get to celebrate her accomplishments of becoming a volunteer for both the Afterschool Academy and Summer Day Camp programs.
