for a 70-year-old woman on a walker, I could get around pretty good. Five years had passed since I could walk unassisted, back at home in Pennsylvania. The truth is, getting old scared me.
But this is a tory of transformation! When I moved here, I joined the Pelham Y for my health. I started attending water classes. They were tremendous fun, easy on the joints, and introduced me to new friends my own age, trying tostay healthy - or sometimes just trying to stay mobile. We learned quickly that age is just a number!
When Pelham introduced a new stretch class, I was excited but nervous. At first I'd sit in a chair, using the bleachers for assitance. Finally I was brave enough to get down on the mat...an I kept up!
As the class ended, the instructor had us come to our knees, rise up, and walk. And I did! There I was, standing by myself at last, but not supported, and definitely not alone - the sounds of cheers and clapping filled my ears, and he love that surrounded me that day was all the support I needed.
